The Columbia Heights/Shaw FamilySupport Collaborative was recently awarded federal funding to strengthen andexpand our community violence prevention and intervention work.

Hispanic Heritage Month @ Cardozo SHS

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic HeritageMonth from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, culturesand contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico,the Caribbean and Central and South America.

This year with the leadership of Ms. Benitez who is the newafter school coordinator, Cardozo Senior High School celebrated their firstHispanic Heritage Month ceremony. This was a great event for Ward 1, it broughtyouth of all races together and shared the Latino culture and customs. Theprogram included typical Latino food (Tacos from Mexico, Pupusas from ElSalvador, Sancocho form Domican Republic, and much more). Youth from all ethnicback grounds were able to indulge in different foods, and music. Nothing stoodout more than the performance by youth from GALA Theater, and the talented QuiqueAvilés. Youth from Gala presented to those in attendance an amazing skit thatportrayed the struggles of immigrant mothers. This was followed by a song thatleft its audience in a whimper of silence. The performances both shocked andleft the audience wanting more. In the end Quique Avilés stunned the audiencewith a poem that gave confidence, and amazed youth from all back grounds.

At the end of the program over 30 youth walked and talkedwithout any immigration boundaries, and treated each other as equals. This wasan amazing event that needs to be commended and supported! This is a great stepfor Ward 1, and a great accomplishment to Cardozo Senior High School.

Substance Abuse Community Conversations

One of the things we talk a lot about on the blog is theimportance of community engagement. Through Community conversations communitiesdiscover what they care about, and what issues are key to the success of theircommunity. Conversation is part of life. And it’s an important part ofcommunity building. In conversation, we not only discover what we care about,we uncover new ideas for building healthy community. “Drug and alcohol abuserates are higher in the District than anywhere else in the country, and expertssay the wide availability of drugs, high stress levels and difficulties gettingabusers into treatment fuel the city's persistently stratospheric rates.” To readmore please see this article that goes in depth on DC’s substance abuse rate.
Since September SWOTDC has taken much interest into findingmore information to help with this issue. In September SWOTDC held meetingsthat discussed substance abuse rates in Wards 1 and 2, and has continue to holdmeetings and community conversations to discuss possible solutions. Secure Communities in DC

In May The American Prospect reported that the deployment of Secure Communities hit a roadblock in the nation’s capital when D.C. council members introduced a bill to ban the program. Secure Communities is a DHS program designed to identify immigrants in U.S. jails who are deportable under immigration law. Under Secure Communities, participating jails submit arrestees’ fingerprints not only to criminal databases, but to immigration databases as well; allowing ICE access to information on individuals held in jails. Unlike other ICE-local partnerships, Secure Communities gives ICE a technological, not physical, presence in prisons and jails. No Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs) with local law-enforcement agencies are required, and no local law-enforcement agents are deputized to enforce immigration laws through Secure Communities.

As of October 2010, Secure Communities is available in 686 jurisdictions in 33 states. ICE plans to have a Secure Communities presence in every state by 2011, and plans to implement Secure Communities in each of the 3,100 state and local jails across the country by 2013. Last month Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier signed an agreement to share arrest data with ICE, despite the district’s longstanding ban on city employees inquiring about immigration status.

For months immigrants’ advocacy and service groups have rallied against secure communities, and have made great progreess to ban the law. In july immigrant advocat groups won a victory when the D.C. Police Department (DCPD) decided to withdraw their agreement with the federal government to implement Secure Communities.

In August 24th Roxana Olivas Director of the Mayor’s Office onLatino Affairs, (OLA) spoke against Secure communites at a rally held in Arlington, Virginia. Olivas had this to say "Fordecades the District of Columbia has had policies that created a "brightline" between Immigration and Custom's Enforcement and local police. Why?Because we care about keeping all communities safe. In 2010 theMetropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier signed an agreement to share arrest datawith ICE, despite the district’s longstanding ban on city employees inquiringabout immigration status." 2011 Data on Child Abuse and Neglect

After a spike in fiscal year (FY) 2009, substantiated cases ofchild abuse and neglect in the District returned to more historic levels in fiscalyear (FY) 2010. The data shows that child abuse and neglect have been decliningacross the country, but there is no evidence of that trend in D.C. Join Serve D.C. for its free National Preparedness Month Forum, “Planning for Access & Functional Needs Populations in Emergencies,” to help celebrate National Preparedness Month. The forum focuses on educating D.C. residents of the necessary precautions needed to ensure safety during emergencies. Various speakers from D.C. government agencies will lead the discussions and communicate the information to people of all ages and abilities.

MLK March Leads to Memorial Unveiling!

On Sunday August 28, 2011 a historic event will take place—the debut of the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. This occasion marks the first monument dedicated to an African American on the National Mall in Washington DC. Leading up to this day, there are several events that will honor and celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. King.

Come join and help pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the D.C. Full Democracy Freedom Rally and March held on Saturday, August 27, 2011. This symbolic march will begin at the Abraham Lincoln monument and continue to the MLK memorial, signifying emancipation to liberation. The rally will feature civil rights leaders and elected officials of the District of Columbia. The purpose of the march is to promote an understanding of the need for jobs and justice. Don’t pass up the opportunity to participate in this remarkable experience!

Ayuda's mission is to protect the rights of low-income immigrants in the DC metropolitan area. We are the District’s leading source of multi-legal and social assistance for low-income immigrants in the areas of immigration, human trafficking, domestic violence and sexual assault. Our overall goal is to improve the ability of our clients to live safe, violence-free lives and become fully participating members of our community.

Currently they have very limited limited access to internet and phone service due to the Verizon strike makes communications a challenge, but they are open for intakes for the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and Anti-Trafficking Program (9:00 am - 5:00 pm walk-in).

DC Public Schools Beautification Day 2011

This Beautification Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 20, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual event was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Strengthening Ward One Together Community Canvass

The fifty organizations of the Strengthening Ward One Together (SWOT) coalition are planning a Community Canvass for Saturday morning, May 14, 2011. Volunteers will meet at the Boys and Girls Club House #10 2500 14th Street, NW Washington, DC 20009 (corner of 14th and Clifton Street) Volunteers will pair up and knock on doors.

The goals? In the short term, we expect to recruit dozens of new volunteers for our organizations, let residents know about our activities, and help connect them to services if they need them.

Security Cameras to be added at Shaw-Howard Metro Station

Councilmember Evans announced last week the upcoming installation of security cameras at both entrances of the Shaw-Howard Metro station.
"The Metro Transit Police and Metropolitan Police are working closely to address the on-going issues at this Metro stop," said Evans. "The addition of these cameras, which will face the station's two entrances, will help to identify those who commit crimes and disrupt the neighborhood."
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has received a $2.7 million Urban Area Security Initiative grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to finance the installation of the security cameras, scheduled for June.
The Metro Transit police has also increased patrol efforts in and around the Shaw-Howard Metro station and deployed a patrol vehicle to the station, in addition to working closely with the Metropolitan Police Department to address crime issues there.

CM Sekou Biddle Discusses School Safety and Truancy Report

On Friday April 22, 2011 Council Member Sekou Biddle was able to discuss with SWOTDC the significance of the special committee on School Safety and Truancy’s recommendations to the entire city council. This was an important step in terms of being able to shape and mold educational reforms. Recommendations discussed in depth included the Families Together Amendment Act of 2010, School Transit Amendment Act, South Capitol Street Tragedy Memorial Act of 2011, and the Coordinating Council’s Truancy Task Force. Save Our Safety Net Walking Tour

On April 21 2011 Save Our Safety Network and SWOT is organizing a walking tour highlighting social service agencies in Columbia Heights whose communities will be affected by the mayor's budget cuts. We have invited Councilmembers Graham and Biddle to attend and hope Ward 1 residents will learn about vital community organizations and share their feelings on the budget.

We'll start at the Columbia Heights Metro at 5:30pm and the tour goes until 6:30. From 6:30-7:30 we're having a happy hour at Alero restaurant that is near the Gala Theatre. This will be an opportunity to pass out information about your agencies, hear about the history of the neighborhood, and talk with Ward 1 residents and council staff. At this point we will also hand/send council staff letters from organizations about how budget cuts affect them, and we'll post the letters on the SOS blog as well. Senior Wellness Center Seeks Donations

The Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center has really begun to serve the area’s seniors in earnest since its open house on February 28th. With your help this program has the potential to serve several senior citizens in Ward 1. They have been able to obtain several donations in the last two months; however it is still not enough to provide for all of their needs.

There are many opportunities for the entire community to be involved and support our seniors. One easy way is through donations of needed items in new or like-new condition. Below is a list of items needed by the Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center. People can call 202-727-0338 for more information.

Support Group for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP) has announced it is now accepting applications for its youthCONNECT initiative which aims to create a network of high-performing nonprofits in the National Capital Region working to improve opportunities for low-income youth, ages 14-24. This is a terrific opportunity for youth-serving nonprofits in Ward 1.

Up to four nonprofit organizations will be selected through the open competition. The initiative is funded in part through the federal Social Innovation Fund (SIF).

The DC Language Access Coalition's S.M.A.R.T. (Student Multiethnic Action Research Team) fellowship for the 2010-2011 school year is looking for students. S.M.A.R.T. is a youth-led decision-making body which advocates and organizes for better education for ESL students and their families. Some of the issues they worked on in the past include demanding bilingual counselors in schools, more after school programs for ESL students, and an accurate needs assessment for every ESL student to avoid an unnecessarily delayed graduation.

Optimally, students will be sophomores or juniors, English Language Learners currently in ESL courses in DC Public Schools or DC public charter schools. Karina Hurtado-Ocampo, the coalition's educational organizer will be conducting interviews through September 3.

Ayuda assists Salvadoran immigrants seeking/re-registering for Temporary Protected Status

From Monday, July 26 to Friday, August 6 Ayuda will be conducting special walk-in hours for TPS renewals from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm for a fee of $60. The extended office hours are exclusively open to Salvadorans who are re-registering for benefits under the current TPS extension.

Ayuda is offering the extended hours because Salvadoran immigrants in particular are often unfamiliar with the US immigration system and their rights under it. Often, these immigrants have limited English language proficiency. The combination of these factors makes these individuals easy prey for unscrupulous "notarios" (or immigration consultants) and/or attorneys who charge outrageously high fees while delivering no assistance.

Salvadoran nationals who want to re-register for TPS should go to Ayuda (1707 Kalorama Rd NW) with their most current TPS work permit, two money orders or personal checks made out to the "US Department of Homeland Security" (one for $80 and the other for $340), as well as Ayuda's $60 fee in cash.

Ayuda continues to offer free legal consultation regarding TPS eligibility. The organizations's regular walk-in hours are Thursdays from 9:00 – 11:00 am in DC and Wednesdays from 9:00 – 10:00 am in Virginia.

Ten volunteers are needed for National Night Out (NNO) on August 3 at various times between 4:00 and 10:00 pm. Target is sponsoring this year's NNO in Columbia Heights and has agreed to help out with our Columbia Heights Day with reciprocal volunteers. NNO will be held at Hyatt Place and the adjoining soccer fields located at Bell Multi-Cultural High School. This event is also very important for keeping our community safe. Also it is great way to meet law enforcement officers in the area as well as Washington Redskins cheerleaders!

DHS seeks input from organizations serving TANF recipients

The Department of Human Services has released a survey to gather information from organizations providing services to recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The information gathered will be used to assist DHS redesign TANF programs and services to better meet the needs of DC residents.

The deadline for participating in the survey is June 30. Access the survey online here. If you want to preview the survey, it is here. Note that the survey must be completed online; it is adaptive and so you will answer questions that are specific to your previous responses and the scope of services provided by your organization.

Organizations that provide TANF recipients with any of the following services are encouraged to complete the survey:

Subsidized employment

Program and job retention supports

TANF was created in the District in March 1997 following the federal reform of welfare. Approximately 16,400 District families receive TANF benefits each month; of those, 74% are required to engage in work, training, or education activities. DHS aims to become a national model for an accountable, compassionate and person-centric approach that helps welfare recipients build capacity, increase earnings, and transition towards self-sufficiency.

Campaign for Recovery in DC kickoff, September 10

Mount Pleasant has long been a leader in enlightened substance abuse policy and programs, but we're slipping.   We pioneered community-oriented Alcoholic Beverage Control Policy, yet more kids buy here alcohol than in any otherstate (proportionately).   We founded Neighbors Consejo to offer treatment rather than jail, but it's fallen on hard times and does not get the support from the city it once did.   We had community policing before it got fashionable, and closed down drug markets on Mount Pleasant Street in the 90's, but our residents still buy and sell drugs, get out of jail and go back to their old habits in the 2-Teens.   It's time we got back to our traditions, not of protest, but proactive action and program building to ensure that Alcohol and Other Drug Disorders (four times more prevalent than HIV/AIDS, by the way) are recognized early, treated promptly and effectively, and that recovery is sustained for life.
AODDs are symptoms of a brain disease, and telling someone to "just say no" and quit drinking and drugging is like telling someone with AIDS to "just say no" to the infections their immune system can no longer fight off.   And even more than AIDS, AODDs have impacts far beyond the people who decide whether to buy, use, or sell drugs.   That makes them a public policy issue no less than air pollution, national defense, or education.   Yet our leaders take little action because they are busy with other problems that get more attention, like jobs, education, crime, traffic, and health care reform - all problems made worse by AODDs.
On Thursday, September 10th, the DC Recovery Community Alliance will hold a workshop to kick off a Campaign for Recovery in DC to describe the problem, offer solutions, and teach skills to advocate for recovery.   The workshop will be held at All Souls Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Ave NW at 7:00 pm.   Our Councilman, Jim Graham, will be the keynote speaker.   There is off-street parking at All Souls and it is a few blocks from the Woodley Park Metro (map available here).

In late April, DC Superior Court announced the Housing Conditions Calendar, a program allowing tenants to sue landlords on an expedited basis. The program specifically deals with housing code violations.

According to the press release:

The Housing Conditions Calendar will be heard by Judge Melvin Wright, Deputy Presiding Judge of the Court’s Civil Division. Judge Wright has worked closely with all the various stakeholders to develop an approach that is efficient, fair and easily accessible by all tenants, especially those not represented by counsel. The forms required for the Housing Conditions calendar were designed to be ‘user friendly’ and the fee is $15. The forms can be found at www.dccourts.gov/housingconditions.

Ward 1 CM Jim Graham recently reprimanded Mayor Fenty for closing the $500 million FY 2011 gap with regressive fees that impact the poor most of all, and by slashing funding for safety net programs that keep our communities strong. CM Graham went on to call for a millionaire's tax to help the city generate enough revenue to invest in an economic recovery that includes all DC residents. Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative is hosting two events in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The first is being held on April 20 and the target population is parents and other caregivers. This workshop will address a number of subjects related to children who are older than 5 years old. The goal is to inform and equip families to address important issues. This event is co-sponsored by the DC Rape Crisis Center.

Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative is also hosting an open house and panel discussion on parent engagement and empowerment on April 29 from 3:30 - 6:00 pm. The target population for this event is school personnel and programs that work with schools and families. More information is in the flier below.

Rite Aid now accepts SNAP (Food Stamps)

Capital Area Food Bank recently shared the news that Rite Aid stores are accepting EBT cards. As you know, there is a Rite Aid on the corner of 13th and U Streets, NW (1306 U Street NW).

According to a Market Watch press release, Rite Aid made this decision to "help meet the needs of its customers." EBT cards are used in DC by those who benefit from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known previously as Food Stamps.

Free HIV prevention training for African-American women

SISTA Adaptation Training is being held on April 23 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. The training will take place at 64 New York Avenue NE on the 5th Floor; lunch will be provided.

"Sisters Informing Sisters on Topics about AIDS" (SISTA) is a group level HIV prevention intervention for African-American females. It has been proven effective in communities of color and is recognized on the CDC's list of Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBIs). The intervention focuses on cultural and gender-relevant ways to increase condom use among African-American women. This adaptation training will focus on how to use "SISTA" to reach young African-American females ages 13-24. The free training will be highly interactive and most appropriate for providers who work directly with African-American female populations. This training is not limited to HIV service providers; all organizations are encouraged to attend.

Culinary Arts Day is being held on Wednesday, April 14 from 10:00-11:30 am and 7:00-8:30 pm. Nurse Aide Training Day on Wednesday, April 21 from 10:00-11:30 am and 7:00-8:30 pm.
